You Are

You are 97, I am 33.
You have projects, I have kids.
When you need me, I am there - I always work around my schedule with kids to make sure of it.

So, the one time I can NOT be there due to scheduling conflicts that cannot be worked around you get huffy and irritated.

No, I cannot ignore my children.
NO! I cannot leave my children alone, on their own, in one house while I'm away at another - and just check on them "if you get the chance".

While I acknowledge what you want to do is important - and pretty much necessary at this point - I just can't drop everything and everyone to come running.

What kind of parent would that make me?

I am everything you have trained me, raised me, to be and I will not apologize if I turned out exactly how you wanted me to because it doesn't suit you for me to be that way.

You cannot have me one way and expect me to be another.

You cannot raise me to be self-sufficient and independent of you then expect me to lean on you and run to you for everything.
